BUT, here's what I do do (or doo doo) for fun. While I'm at work and have nothing to do and have read email and there's nothing left after that and I don't want to youtube, play or anything else I've discovered that at the top or Steve's blog there's a little button that says "next blog". WOW - a world opened up! I've found out so many things in the last week. Did you know that most bloggers (in my very limited, subjective and short experience) are stay at home moms with young children. Other than that they seem to be Spanish or Malaysian teenagers. Almost everyone of them loves crafting or cooking. They record the funny answers to the questions they ask their 2/3/4 year olds and are very thankful (I haven't seen one blog where she wasn't!) for the opportunity of being a Mom. Now, in case this sounds a little sarcastic, it isn't! My kick in life is not writing or singing or playing music. In reality it is delving into the mystery and sublety and pure wonder of people. Who they are, where they come from, what they love, where they're going. And yes, while there is most definitely a common thread in most of the blogs I peek at (I've never left a comment) there is also endless variation.
I have a friend here in HK a little younger than me and we sit and tell HK v westerner stories. Fascinating for me. She tells me HK people are very serious and plan years and years into the future. You (typically) get married around 30 or later (27, her age was young), then most have 1 child (any more interferes with travelling 3 times a year) and when you have a child you have a helper to look after it from about 6 weeks. I'm always seeming to ask her why questions. She can't answer them of course. I have another friends (31) who tells me it's too late for him to get married. His reasoning is that the only reason to get married is to have a child and he's too old. By the time he finished paying for the child's university he'll be at least 55 or 60 and doesn't want to be that "old" of a father. He's completely serious. The best part of not travelling but living somewhere is to really get a taste of what makes people tick, how they're wired and where they get their juice from. Toto, we ain't in Kansas any more!
Sadly, with my attention span I know my newly acquired voyeuristic habit has almost run it's course. It whiled away a few empty times, but frankly, I have a lot of chinese homework to do. And nothing's as good as the real thing! (lol)
